Plumpton High School has had a significant focus on the development of Literacy and Numeracy over the past 6-7 years. Our school has excelled in 2022 in comparison to all NSW schools and schools in NSW that are similar to Plumpton (see below).
In the area of Literacy, we began our focus on development of reading skills with the implementation of the Accelerated Reader program as reading is the essential first step to then go on to improve writing skills. Some of our students are reading in excess of 1,000,000 or 2,000,000 words each year and one student in Year 8 has read 12,087,945 words during 2022 (see below).
Our writing strategy is now embedded in all key learning areas led by our English Faculty who have implemented additional evidence-based strategies into their teaching and learning programs. One of these strategies is the ALARM Matrix that is used in Years 7-12, implemented to support students in writing extended responses in line with the varying genres required across the curriculum.
I would like to congratulate our English, Learning and Support faculties and all staff along with our students who are displaying significant improvements in writing, an essential skill required for any successful study, employment, and life success. We still have work to do, but this is a very pleasing result.
