Learning
At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.

What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
Our curriculum provides a structured pathway for students from Year 7 to Year 12, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive education aligned with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements.
Stage 4 & 5: Years 7–10
Students study eight key learning areas:
- English
- Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)
- Languages
- Mathematics
- Personal Development, Health & Physical Education (PDHPE)
- Science
- Creative Arts
- Technology and Applied Studies (TAS)
All students complete mandatory courses set by NESA and may choose from a range of elective subjects offered based on staff expertise and the number of students interested in that subject.
Stage 6: Years 11–12
In Years 11 and 12, students study for the Higher School Certificate (HSC).
There are two main types of HSC courses:
- Board Developed Courses: Set and examined by NESA, and may count towards the ATAR.
- Board Endorsed Courses: Developed by schools, TAFE, or universities; count toward the HSC but not the ATAR.
Vocational education and training courses
Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are either Board developed courses, which may contribute to the calculation of an ATAR, or Board endorsed courses.
VET courses give students work-related skills in a variety of industry areas. Students will receive a nationally recognised qualification when they complete their course.
Some VET courses are studied at school while others can be studied at TAFE institutes and other training providers. Many VET courses involve work placement.
Board developed VET courses are available in a number of industry curriculum frameworks, such as hospitality and information technology.

At Plumpton High School, we will be offering students the opportunity to attend Combined Christian SRE (Special Religious Education) from Term 2. This will take place during lunch 2 on Fridays in the GWS Performing Arts Centre. The provider, the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, delivered by Liberty Baptist Church and Victory Baptist Church, will be using the Think Faith Curriculum
Attendance is voluntary and students from all different backgrounds, cultures and beliefs are welcome. If your child wishes to attend they must be enrolled via the online enrolment system.
When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.
You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or use the online form.
Further information on Think Faith can be found at the Think Faith website.

At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.
We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

Our learning approach
Our school uses explicit teaching. This means we clearly tell students what they are learning, why it is important and how to do it step by step. Explicit teaching helps students understand new ideas by breaking them into smaller parts.
Learning at our school is student-centred, inclusive and practical. We are committed to equity and access. We support all learning styles and needs. Our teachers use proven teaching strategies. They take part in ongoing professional development to stay up to date with best teaching practice.
Our learning approach includes:
- real-world learning: hands-on tasks, group work and exploring new ideas
- technology: to help students learn and build digital skills
- flexible teaching: the right support for each student, with a focus on wellbeing
- community connections: through excursions and local programs.
Helping students progress
We support every student’s academic progress by:
- checking their progress and giving clear and timely feedback
- setting learning goals with each student
- giving extra help with personalised plans and support from specialist staff
- reporting on each student’s learning progress so parents and carers know how their child is doing
