Accelerated Reader – Congratulations Million Words Read Semester 1 2025

29 Aug 2025

Congratulations to the students in years 7, 8, 9 who have read a million plus words during Semester 1 of 2025 with Ryan Canavaro topping the list having read 2,150,350 words. The Accelerated Reader helps schools build strong reading habits by guiding students to the right books, tracking comprehension, and supporting fluency, confidence, and engagement.

Used in schools for nearly 40 years, it’s a proven way to encourage daily reading while giving teachers clear, actionable insights into each student’s progress. Plumpton implemented the program in 2018, and it has supported increased reading and comprehension that sees the school sit above the NSW and National average for reading in NAPLAN. It has also supported increased success across the curriculum for students as their reading proficiency has improved significantly.

The program encourages independent reading with purpose Matches students with books at the right level, provides instant feedback through quizzes on 44,000+ titles and supports targeted teaching with real-time data. At Plumpton students in Years 7, 8 and 9 read their accelerated Reader book for the first 15 minutes of each English, HSIE and Science lesson. This ensures that every student completes a minimum of 30 minutes of reading each day, the amount required for reading growth up to 45 minutes based on their timetable. We encourage our student to also read their Accelerated Reader books at home to support their reading growth, an essential skill for success.

Thank you to Ms Bailey, our Librarian and Ms Gonzaga, Head Teacher English for leading the highly successful program.
