Learning support

We monitor each student's progress and provide additional learning support if this is required.

Our school uses learning programs and specialised staff where needed and we work in partnership with parents and carers to assist students who have special learning needs.

Our school is committed to working with Aboriginal parents and community members in developing personalised plans for our Aboriginal students.

The Learning Centre was created in 2007 to provide a hub for student support services. It is designed to meet the needs of all students in a wide range of areas - learning, social, behaviour, emotional, and post school planning through targeted interventions delivered either individually or through groups.

The aim of the Learning Centre is to provide a formal process via which staff, parents and students can access assistance in order to maximise the learning of all students at Plumpton High School. 

Marnie Pleffer, the Head Teacher, has responsibility for the leadership of learning support and the Learning Centre. Lynne Wegrzyn, the Support Teacher Learning Assistance is the contact person for students requiring additional support at school.

Who is it for?

For all students:

  • Performing in the low bands in NAPLAN and ESSA
  • Identified as having significant learning issues through formal assessment carried out by the School Counsellor or Support Staff
  • Identified as requiring additional support by the Principal, Deputy Principals, Head Teachers Classroom Teachers in consultation with their Head Teacher, i.e. those having difficulties in specific lessons across the spectrum of abilities and year groups
  • Who are from a Non English Speaking Background
  • Who identify themselves as requiring support to meet their learning goals
  • Returning to school after a long absence as a result of illness or school refusal
  • Needing assistance with assessment tasks, exam preparation and those accessing behaviour coaching using Positive Behaviour for Learning strategies
  • Completing learning, behaviour, transition and school-to-work plans

Management of the Learning Centre

The Learning Centre is staffed and managed by the Learning Support Faculty. When a student is referred to the Learning Centre, a program or work will be negotiated with the referring person.

A structured referral, monitoring and recording procedure operates to support each student in the Learning Centre and is filed to monitor student progress. Teachers receive a work report after the student's lesson in the Learning Centre.

Extension work/differentiated tasks may be separately developed and assessed by the Support Faculty and may be included in the work returned to the teacher. External agencies may be involved with the Learning Centre and may provide opportunities for students to access short or extended programs which meet their individual learning needs.

The Learning Centre has the potential to function as a special provisions area, gifted and talented resource room, review meetings, Learning Support Officer/Aboriginal Education Officer space.

The Referral Process

  1. Identified student(s) through in-class assessment/performance
  2. In class strategies implemented
  3. Students progress still of concern
  4. Discussed with Head Teacher
  5. Teacher/student/parent completed referral form for Learning Centre
  6. Lodged with Learning Centre (keeping in mind the Learning Centre operates on a weekly timetable)
  7. Support staff review request, prioritise need, negotiate access and work to be completed and book in on availability
  8. Student attends Learning Centre during specified period(s) and works with Support Staff
  9. Support Staff report back to Teacher at the end of each lesson
  10. Students referral, monitoring and recording forms filed with the school
