Congratulations to Zain Al-Shible and Haaziq Anwaar who have won FIRST PLACE in the 2023 Australian Day of AI competition, building on Plumpton High Schools placings from last year. The competition was open to students in years 5 to 10 and tasks students developed were to improve their school or community using of Artificial Intelligence. The competition was designed to assist students apply the concepts learned during the Day of AI by developing an idea for their own AI technology project.
Each entrant needed to create a short video outlining their idea as guided by Day of AI. Over 20,000 students around Australia participated in this competition with students worldwide participating in the second annual “Day of AI” on May 18, yet another sign of artificial intelligence’s growing significance to schools. Students worked in pairs for this project, with one pair representing the respective class with their “AI solution”.
Haaziq and Zain’s IDEA: “Our AI solution is an advanced image recognition system that identifies defects in manufacturing processes, reducing waste and increasing efficiency in factories. By analysing product images, AI algorithms detect defects missed by human inspectors. High resolution cameras capture images along the production line to determine whether a product is defected or not. Deep learning techniques would enable accurate defect detection and classification in real-time. Visualisations and reports provide insights for managers to optimise production. The system continuously learns and adapts, improving over time. Implementing our AI-powered solution would enhance quality control, reduce costs, and boost productivity in factories”.
“Implementing our AI solution in manufacturing processes will make our community better in several ways. Firstly, it will significantly reduce waste by catching defects early in the production line. This promotes sustainability and cost-effectiveness for businesses, leading to a cleaner and greener community. Additionally, the AI system will increase overall manufacturing efficiency, allowing companies to deliver higher-quality products to consumers, enhancing customer satisfaction and trust”.
Zain and Haaziq won $1,200 to go towards setting their class up for a “great tech environment or experience”. The money can be used to purchase technology for the classroom such as iPads, laptop, audio-visual equipment or an excursion to a tech-centric location.
Thank you to the TDM Foundation for their tremendous support of this program that sees students and teachers throughout Australia benefit from their philanthropic work. This vital work also keeps us at the forefront of essential education required for our nation’s future success and prosperity. Also, to CS In Schools for their tremendous work in supporting schools to educate our next generation of excellent tech innovators and leaders.

I would also like to congratulate Mr Jaswal, Mr. Honeysett and Mr Shakespeare for their incredible work in our TAS faculty that sees our teaching and learning of technology such as AI continuing to expand and at such a high level. This ensures our students are well placed being able to use and have future careers in developing most recent and innovative technologies.
