Over the past month, 16 of our Year 11 students have participated in the fabulous ABCN Aspirations Program, which was run in collaboration with Swiss Re. The Program was delivered over 4 sessions, over 4 consecutive weeks. Weeks 1 and 2 were delivered at Swiss Re Offices in Barangaroo and Weeks 2 and 3 were delivered digitally at school. Students were supported by ABCN facilitators and 6 generous mentors from Swiss Re.
Aspirations is designed to familiarise students with the working world and equip them with the skills to build a successful career. Research shows there is a gap between what young people learn at school and the skills they need to be successful at work. Mentors sharing their own career journeys and challenges can make an enormous impact as students consider their options for the future. Sessions include understanding the different career pathways available, personal brand, recognizing personal strengths, interview techniques and the development of essential enterprise skills such as communication and teamwork.
Session 1
To gain career insights from mentors and an understanding of modern workplaces to examine our own strengths, skills, attitudes, and values and how they relate to the modern workplace to learn about diverse career pathways
Session 2
Making decisions about different pathways beyond school requires students to start building an idea of who they are. If students can identify what they enjoy doing, their strengths and values then they can begin to understand themselves.
Session 3
Becoming familiar with key employability and enterprise skills will help us to understand employers’ expectations. It also helps students to start to become familiar with the language that is necessary for a successful job interview.
Session 4
This session will put into practice all that has been explored in the previous sessions by having students prepare for and practice a job interview, understand where to go to find out about money matters, and the skills and mindsets required for changing careers.
