20 students from Years 10-12 participated in a "My Career Rules" Program with ABCN at the Western Sydney (Nancy-Bird Walton) International Airport. The program gave students the opportunity to prepare questions and interact with a panel of professionals from specific jobs and industries, opening their minds to careers that reflect the current workplace. Providing a link between classroom learning and the real world of work, it reinforced messages about the skills and mindsets needed to make a successful career in the future workplace.
Research shows that students need lots of role models from the world of work to model options available to them. Mentors shared their own career journeys and challenges. They made an enormous impact as students considered their options for the future. In past Programs 81% of students said they were more motivated to explore post-school careers and jobs and 87% said it’s OK to fail or to change your mind about your career path. Students were also taken on a bus tour of the Airport's perimeter and were immersed in Airport information and plans at the Experience Centre.
Thank you to Eva, her team at Western Sydney International Airport (WSIA) and ABCN for providing this unique opportunity for our students. Thank you also to our student advocate Gemma Avon for her work in supporting our students aspirations paths to future success.
