Year 9/10 Chinese - Ordering food at a restaurant lesson

Stage 5 Chinese - ordering at a restaurant lesson

Our Year 9/10 elective students immersed themselves in the world of traditional Chinese cuisine, exploring a range of delights from buns (bao zi) to scallion pancakes (cong you bing), including fried dumplings, noodles, rice, and dough sticks (you tiao). Alongside savouring these culinary treasures, they honed their skills in ordering food in Chinese through dedicated research and learning.

The classroom underwent a delightful transformation into a restaurant, providing a hands-on opportunity for students to apply their newfound knowledge. The excitement was palpable as they eagerly tasted traditional Chinese dishes for the first time, fully immersing themselves in engaging role-playing activities centred around ordering food.

Their learning journey incorporated a comprehensive approach, enhancing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills:

• Reading: Students navigated a fully Chinese character menu crafted by Miss Zhang, successfully answering questions about each item's price in Chinese.

• Writing: Each student randomly selected a number, identified the corresponding numbered food, and wrote its name in Chinese on an A4 paper, confidently displayed in front of the dish.

• Listening and Speaking: In groups of 2 or 3, students alternated roles as waitstaff and customers. They practiced taking and completing orders entirely in Chinese, sharing comments on flavours and expressing likes or dislikes.

Congratulations to Ms Zhang and these students for their immersive and multifaceted exploration of Chinese culinary traditions!
